Travel Assistance

What help with home to school transport is available?

Derby City Council’s Home to School Transport Assistance Policy sets out the help they may be able to provide pupils who don’t live within walking distance of their nearest suitable school.

This distance, set out in the Education Act 1996, is measured by the shortest available walking route and is:

  • two miles for children under eight
  • three miles for children aged eight and over.

The help they provide for children who qualify is a free school transport bus pass.

  • are eight to 16 years old who live more than three miles from school
