PE

The PE department has 8 teachers, with six staff having additional school responsibilities.

At Alvaston Moor Academy we are lucky to have great sporting facilities; Sports hall, Gymnasium, Fitness Suite, Astro turf, MUGA and 2 large fields suitable for rugby; football and athletics.

Through a broad, balanced and comprehensive program of physical activities and learning experiences, the PE department fully support the strong ethos within Alvaston Moor Academy where we aim to inspire all students, regardless of ability, to have a love of lifelong learning in physical education.  We do this by running a personalised PE program that aims to provide a challenging, purposeful, enjoyable and safe experience.  Our holistic approach to PE is designed to develop physical, mental and social health whilst also instilling our four key values through a culture of excellence, determination, empathy and community. Our core curriculum is designed to equip learners with the physical, academic and emotional skills to allow them to lead informed health, active lifestyles.


KS3 Curriculum plan/map

How are Students assessed at KS3?

At KS3 students have 2 hours of PE a week with termly assessments in each unit. Each practical sport unit assess the students in three strands.

Head – Pupils are assessed on their understanding and knowledge within one individual and one team sport for the Rules, Safety, Technique and Tactics of the sports being covered.

Heart – Pupils are assessed for their Team work, Participation, Positivity and for giving

‘Our Best Effort’.

Hands – Pupils are assessed in each sport studied for their Skills, Performance, Control

and Consistency.

All students in year 9 have the option to participate in a Health and Nutrition or Dance program that helps to embed specific knowledge towards examination awards.

KS4 Curriculum plan/map

KS4

At KS4 again students have compulsory lessons in core PE but can also opt in to an examination subject in PE. In Year 10 students follow a two year curriculum for examination subjects with a further 3 lessons per week.

It is recommended that students have a passion for sport and working at Level 4 in Ks3. It is beneficial that the student plays a competitive sport outside of school.

The Cambridge Nationals in Sport Science offer learners the opportunity to study key areas of sport science including anatomy and physiology linked to fitness, health, injury and performance; the science of training and application of training principles, and psychology in sport and sports performance

How are students assessed at KS4?

Students will need to show their proficiency in both practical and theoretical elements through centre assessed coursework, which accounts for 75% of the overall grade.

Students will be able to work confidently and independently to create material which reflects thoughtful planning, skilled development and perceptive evaluation as well as actively demonstrating practical skills and qualities at a high level. They will be able to apply knowledge, understanding and skills in a variety of contexts, confidently exploring, identifying, selecting and using a wide range of sport science methods and approaches which add value in the workplace and in higher education.

Students will study 4 units, 2 compulsory units consisting of external exam and 2 optional units.

R041: Reducing the risk of sports injuries Written paper OCR set and marked 1 hour – 60 marks

R042: Applying principles of training Centre-assessed tasks OCR-moderated 60 marks

2 Optional units

R043: The body’s response to physical activity Centre-assessed tasks OCR-moderated 60 marks

R044: Sport psychology Centre-assessed tasks OCR-moderated 60 marks

R045: Sports nutrition Centre-assessed tasks OCR-moderated 60 marks

R046: Technology in sport Centre-assessed tasks OCR-moderated 60 marks

Students will need to show that they are proficient at performing, appraising and evaluating different elements of sports undertaken in each unit.

Extension Activities / Planned Trips

To complement the curriculum the department offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students of all ages. The academy takes part in city leagues and tournaments. In some sports we have teams taking part in county and nationwide competitions.

Our KS4 academic pathways provide an inclusive learning environment to allow students who have a passion for sport to develop their skills and understanding to give our students the opportunity to continue to study at College with aspirations to attend University or in the world of work.
