Less distraction. More learning. Better relationships.

Alvaston Moor Academy is a phone-free academy. We want students to be fully present in lessons and during social times, without the distraction of mobile phones, notifications and social media.
Students can bring a mobile phone to the academy for their journey to and from school, but phones are handed in and securely stored during the academy day.
Focus on learning
Removing phones from the school day reduces distractions and allows students to concentrate fully on their learning
Time to connect
Breaks and lunchtimes should be opportunities to talk, socialise and build positive relationships with other students.
A calmer school day
A phone-free day creates space away from notifications, social media and the pressures that can follow students into school.
ARRIVE
📱
Students arrive at the academy with their phone switched off.
HAND IN
🔒
During the morning routine, students hand in their phone. Each phone is stored securely in the student’s individual pouch within their tutor group’s phone box.
PHONE-FREE
🎓
Phones remain securely stored throughout lessons and social times.
COLLECT
🏠
Phones are returned at the appropriate point at the end of the academy day.
What happens if my child arrives late?
Students who arrive after the normal morning phone collection hand their phone to the Attendance Team. Their phone is placed securely in the designated late phone storage.
Where a student is required to attend a Culture detention that day, their phone is transferred to the appropriate storage and returned at the end of the detention.
What if my child leaves early?
If your child has permission to leave the academy before the end of the school day, their phone will be collected from their individual pouch and returned to them before they leave the site.
Medical exemptions
We recognise that some students need access to a mobile phone as part of managing a medical condition.
Where phone access is required for an agreed medical reason, such as monitoring diabetes, individual arrangements will be made with the student and their family. These students are not expected to hand in a phone that they need to manage their medical needs.
If a phone is not handed in
We expect every student who does not have an agreed exemption to follow the phone-free routine.
If a student is found with a phone during the academy day, or uses a phone or other prohibited device, the academy’s behaviour procedures will be followed.
Repeated refusal to follow the phone-free expectations will be addressed with the student and their family.
📞 Need to contact your child during the school day?
If you need to get an urgent message to your child, please contact the academy directly rather than calling or messaging their mobile phone.
We will make sure that important messages reach your child.
Similarly, if your child needs to contact you during the academy day, staff will support them to do so where appropriate.

Thank you for your support
A successful phone-free academy relies on students, families and staff working together.
We ask parents and carers to support the academy by not messaging or calling students on their mobile phones during the school day and by reinforcing the expectation that phones are handed in each morning.
Together, we can protect valuable time for learning, friendships and being part of our academy community.
