How are Students assessed at KS3?

Our KS3 PE curriculum provides students with a broad and balanced programme of physical activities designed to develop confidence, teamwork, resilience and lifelong participation in sport and exercise. Across Years 7 to 9, students experience a wide variety of activities including football, rugby, netball, basketball, badminton, hockey, cricket, rounders, athletics, gymnastics, dance, handball and outdoor adventurous activities. Students develop core physical skills, tactical understanding, fitness and sportsmanship while learning the importance of cooperation, leadership and healthy competition.

Throughout KS3, students build their knowledge of health-related fitness and learn how physical activity supports both physical and mental wellbeing. Activities are carefully sequenced to allow students to refine skills over time, apply strategies in competitive situations and improve their confidence in performance. The curriculum encourages all students to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and develop a positive attitude towards healthy, active lifestyles, providing strong foundations for continued participation in sport and progression into Physical Education at GCSE level.

KS4 Curriculum plan/map

KS4

At KS4 again students have compulsory lessons in core PE but can also opt in to an examination subject in PE. In Year 10 students follow a two year curriculum for examination subjects.

It is recommended that students have a passion for sport in KS3. It is beneficial that the student plays a competitive sport outside of school.

GCSE PE combines academic study with practical sporting performance, giving students a strong understanding of how the body works and how performance can be improved. Students study a range of theoretical topics including anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training, sports psychology and the social and cultural influences on sport. They also explore health, fitness and wellbeing, learning about lifestyle choices, nutrition and the benefits of exercise. The course develops both subject knowledge and important transferable skills such as resilience, teamwork, discipline and commitment.

Alongside the theory content, students are assessed practically in three sports, including both team and individual activities, and complete a Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) where they design, carry out and evaluate a training plan. Assessment is through two written examinations and non-exam practical assessment. The course follows the AQA GCSE Physical Education specification and is ideal for students with an interest in sport, fitness and performance. Participation in sports outside of school can be beneficial, and PE kit is required for practical elements of the course.
