Welcome to the Alvaston Moor Academy Independent Study hub. We believe that independent study is a vital part of your child’s learning journey, helping them build long-term memory, strong self-discipline, and essential study habits for the future.
To keep things straightforward and manageable for both students and families, our independent study model uses clear routines, digital platforms, and a phone-free school environment.
How It Works at a Glance
We use trusted, adaptive digital platforms so students can access their work easily using Single Sign-On (SSO):

Weekly Timetable & Structure
- Set by: Midday every Wednesday.
- Due by: 8:30 am the following Wednesday.
Key Stage Differences
- KS3 (Years 7, 8, and 9): Focused heavily on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy. Independent study is set weekly for Maths, Science, and English only (approximately 30 minutes per subject). To keep priorities clear and manageable, no other homework is set at KS3.
- KS4 (Years 10 and 11): Expanded across all subjects. Core subjects (Maths, Science, and English) and all option subjects set weekly independent study (approximately 1 hour per subject), with added flexibility for past papers and targeted exam preparation.
In-School Support: No Child Left Behind
We recognise that not every student has a quiet study space or device access at home. We ensure every child has the support they need to succeed before the Wednesday deadline:
- Independent Study Clubs: Run in our ICT rooms on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, fully staffed by our learning support team.
- Lunchtime Support: Available Monday through Friday for students who want a quiet space to complete work during the school day.
Rewards and Celebration
We love celebrating hard work and commitment! Students are rewarded regularly through:
- Weekly Rewards: Top-performing students receive certificates and treats like bagels, while top-performing tutor groups enjoy a Friday morning breakfast.
- House Competitions: Half-termly House Champion awards and raffle entries for vouchers.
- Annual Recognition: Special celebration events for top subject achievers at the end of the year.
How Parents and Carers Can Help
Your encouragement makes a huge difference. You can support your child by:
- Providing a quiet space for them to study when possible.
- Checking deadlines together and encouraging them to complete tasks before Wednesday morning.
- Celebrating their efforts and engaging with platform updates and school messages.
